Frequently asked questions
General Information & Functions
The d-you Wallet is the digital wallet for Germany. With the smartphone app, you can securely store and present your digital ID cards and certificates. This includes, for example, your digital national ID card or residence permit, your digital driver's license, and in the future, certificates or tickets. Usage is voluntary and free of charge. Only the data required for the specific purpose is shared.
d-you is the German implementation of the European EUDI Wallet (European Digital Identity). It is based on European regulations for digital identities. With the EUDI Wallet, the digital ID and certificates will in the future also be usable in other EU member states.
No. Usage is voluntary. Your physical documents remain valid. There will continue to be other options for identification. Companies are not generally obliged to offer or accept the Wallet
No. The state-run Wallet is free of charge. However, fees may apply for the issuance of a certificate from the respective issuer, independent of the Wallet usage. These fees are not incurred by using the Wallet itself.
Setup
The Wallet is available for iOS starting from version 18 and Android starting from version 14. Your smartphone must also support certain security functions and have NFC capability
You need:
- A smartphone with NFC function, compatible with d-you (see FAQ 2.1)
- The installed Wallet app
- A national ID card or an electronic residence permit (eAT) with activated online ID function
- Your six-digit card PIN
- A smartphone with NFC During setup, the chip of your ID card is read once via NFC.
The Wallet requires special security functions of your smartphone. These include functions for secure storage and processing of data. An app can utilize these functions better than a browser. Whether there will be further options for accessing the Wallet in the future depends on technical and legal developments.
To use the Wallet, you need an internet connection. If your smartphone is unavailable, defective, or out of battery, you cannot use the Wallet. Other digital certificates are expected to be displayable without an active internet connection in the future. Corresponding technical solutions are currently under development. Your physical IDs and documents remain valid.
Yes, if you want to set up your digital ID. For this purpose, your ID card is read once via NFC. For other digital certificates, NFC is not always required.
The 5 codes have different purposes. These numbers belong to your ID card:
One-Time PIN: This five-digit PIN is needed once to set up your Card PIN. You will find the One-Time PIN in the PIN letter sent by post after applying for your national ID card or electronic residence permit.
Card PIN: This six-digit PIN protects the online ID function of your ID card.
CAN: This six-digit number is located on the front of your ID card. You need it, among other things, if you have entered your Card PIN incorrectly twice.
PUK: With the ten-digit PUK, you can unlock a blocked Card PIN. If you have forgotten your Card PIN, you can have a new PIN set at the competent ID authority. After three incorrect entries, the Card PIN is blocked. You can unlock it with the PUK. Note: If you have entered your Card PIN incorrectly twice, you will usually be asked for the CAN. Enter it to receive another attempt for your Card PIN. The CAN is not a secret PIN but the six-digit access number on the front of your ID card, to the right of the validity date. You can read it on your ID card at any time. This code is set within d-you:
Digital ID Code: This six-digit code protects your digital identity within the Wallet. If you forget your Digital ID Code, you cannot reset it. In this case, you must set up the Wallet anew for security reasons.
Usage & Use Cases
Before releasing data, the Wallet shows you who is requesting the data, which data is needed, and for what purpose. Data is only shared with your consent. Without your approval, no data from your Wallet is shared.
With selective disclosure, you share only the data required for a specific process. For example, during age verification, it can be confirmed that you are of legal age without your exact date of birth needing to be transmitted.
Yes. Banks that are legally required to identify their customers can use the digital ID in the Wallet for identification. This applies, for example, to identification under the Money Laundering Act. Account opening can thus take place digitally. Legal requirements for identification must still be met.
The digital driver's license is the digital proof of your driving entitlement on the smartphone. In Germany, it is expected to become available via the i-kfz app from the end of 2026. From the launch of d-you on January 2, 2027, it should also be available there. The availability and use of the digital driver's license in individual EU countries depends largely on how the technical prerequisites are implemented in each country and which legal provisions apply there. The digital driver's license complements the card-based driver's license. It does not replace it entirely.
Data Protection & Security
Your data is stored locally on your phone and cryptographically protected. The Wallet operator has no access to the contents of your Wallet. For certain security functions, keys are managed in specially protected hardware security modules. There is no central collection of your Wallet data
No. Profiling is technically prevented. The provider receives no information about when, where, or with whom you use the Wallet. Commercial use or sharing of usage data with third parties is excluded.
Yes, prospectively throughout Europe. d-you is based on the EU regulation eIDAS 2.0. This regulation sets uniform and secure standards for digital identities in the EU. The goal is that you can also use d-you in other EU countries. Whether and exactly when this becomes possible depends on further implementation.
Device Change, Loss & Deletion
In principle, yes. However, your certificates are not automatically transferred to other devices. If you use a new device, you must set up the Wallet anew and add the required certificates again. The use of the digital ID is possible on a maximum of 2 devices.
If you have lost your phone, you can remotely delete your d-you data. To do this, go to walletapp.org/lost-phone. For this, you need your deletion key. You receive it when you set up your Wallet for the first time. Keep the deletion key separate from your phone. After deletion, your Wallet is invalid. It can then no longer be used to present certificates. The app on the lost phone subsequently deletes all certificates. When are the certificates deleted? This depends on whether you allowed notifications in the app:
- With notifications: Certificates are deleted as soon as the app can receive the push notification.
- Without notifications: Certificates are deleted as soon as the app is started next. Until then, the lock on your phone protects against unauthorized use. This can be, for example, a fingerprint or face recognition. For the digital ID, your Digital ID Code is additionally required. You can also trigger deletion even if the lost phone is switched off or the battery is empty. The contents are deleted as soon as the app is restarted. If you do not have your deletion key, you can also remotely delete the Wallet via the loss function of your phone:
- iPhone: via "Find My": https://www.icloud.com/find
- Android: via "Find My Device": https://www.android.com/learn-find-hub/ Important: Blocking or deletion cannot be undone. On a new phone, you set up d-you anew and retrieve your certificates again.
Error Messages & Troubleshooting
Your smartphone could not read the chip of your identity document. Check:
- Is NFC activated?
- Is the identity document placed correctly on the smartphone?
- Has the protective case been removed?
- Is your smartphone sufficiently charged?
The connection between your Wallet and the relying party was interrupted or was too slow. This can be due, for example, to a poor internet connection or a temporary disturbance. Try again after a few minutes.
If the error persists:
- Restart your smartphone.
- Check your internet connection.
- Try the transmission again.
The app has detected an error it cannot resolve itself.
Restart your smartphone and open the app again. If the error occurs again, contact Support. Provide the following information:
- The full text of the error message
- The Trace ID, if one is displayed
- The Trace ID is a unique number. Support can use it to find the relevant error more precisely in its systems.
The Wallet stopped the transmission for security reasons.
This can happen, for example, if:
- The relying party is not classified as trustworthy
- More data is requested than agreed
- Your data was not transmitted in this case.
You can report the incident directly via the error message. The Wallet transmits the necessary information for this.
Your smartphone or its operating system currently does not meet the security requirements of the Wallet. Depending on the cause, an update of the operating system or a security update from the manufacturer may be required.
The exact cause is indicated by an error code. Possible error codes include: Device_Vulnerable_Fixable: The security of your device may be compromised. However, the vulnerabilities can presumably be fixed. For example, with an upcoming security update. Outdated_OS_Version: The Android or iOS version of your smartphone is too old. It no longer meets the security requirements of the app. The manufacturer can tell you if and when an update is coming. Outdated_Patch_Level: The operating system is missing important security updates. Here too, an inquiry with the manufacturer of your smartphone helps.
Important: Without the required updates, the app may no longer work. Your real identity documents remain unaffected and valid.
Relying Parties and Use Cases
A Relying Party (RP) or verifier (generally also referable to as "service") is any organisation or institution that verifies digital credentials presented by users via their EUDI Wallet. The RP relies on the issuers and the underlying trust infrastructure of the ecosystem. This ensures that the submitted data is both authentic and valid at the time of verification.
The EUDI Wallet will be provided from 2027. Early integration is recommended. Testing use cases and participation in the sandbox is a prerequisite for later use in production.
You can test your use case in the EUDI Wallet Sandbox if you participate as a Relying Party or EAA Provider. A concrete PID or EAA use case and technical readiness for testing are prerequisites. The project team supports you in refining your use case and preparing the technical connection. In the test environment, you can then test the retrieval, issuance, or verification of EUDI Wallet data and digital credentials with test data. Further information on the procedure and the ecosystem can be found in the Ecosystem Knowledge Center and the Onboarding Guide of the EUDI Hub.
Initial application scenarios for Relying Parties are already presented in the Ecosystem Knowledge Center. These include solutions for mobility, verification of entitlements (such as student IDs or volunteering cards), as well as identification in the digital and physical space—for example, for secure access control to corporate resources.
Integration possibilities depend heavily on the corresponding use cases and existing specialist procedures. The national EUDI Wallet project provides guidelines for technical development for all Wallet functions (so-called "Developer Guides") to make integration into existing systems as simple as possible. Integration is the responsibility of the respective providers.
No, usage is voluntary, but offers significant relief for both users and companies through seamless, time-saving, and more efficient processes in everyday life.
Sandbox
The EUDI Wallet Sandbox is Germany's official test environment for the state EUDI Wallet. It enables companies, organisations, and authorities to test use cases in a secure, production-like environment before they are rolled out comprehensively. The Sandbox is open to both public and private organisations and supports compliance with eIDAS 2.0 regulations.
The EUDI Wallet Sandbox is initially aimed at organisations that wish to validate their identification processes (PID) under realistic conditions with test data. As first movers, these participants support the further development of the ecosystem and use the Sandbox as a communal learning platform. Access for further organisations will be opened step by step to enable broad preparation for the official rollout of the national EUDI Wallet. To check if your organisation is ready to join, we recommend reviewing the Onboarding Guide and planning your specific use cases early.
- Check the Onboarding Requirements.
- Define your PID use case and submit it for review.
- Go through the onboarding steps, including a kick-off meeting with the project team.
- Use the Sandbox Readiness Checklist to assess your organisation's readiness.
